Welcome to my living room, friends! As soon as we found out we were moving back to Decatur several months ago, I immediately started looking at decorating ideas on Pinterest. I was just so eager! Our past apartments have always been a blend of hand me downs and purchases that were meant to just get us by, so I never really got to decorate the way I wanted. Nathan and I also don’t have the same style, so I knew it was going to take a long time to find the perfect blend. He is more traditional and I’m a bit more eclectic and glam!
We are both so happy with the way this room turned out. Since it is the only living space in our home I knew I really needed to get this right. We host our families quite a bit so we knew we needed plenty of seating so people can be comfortable, but it also needed to look pretty. I love how cozy and elegant it is. We spend most of our time here and it has worked perfectly for us so far! Now if only I could get some pictures on the walls….
This room originally had old carpet, popcorn ceilings, and yellow walls. We put in a dark laminate, painted the walls gray, and had knock down ceilings put in. It has made such a huge difference! It doesn’t even look like the house we originally bought. I can’t wait to show you guys the rest!
Nathan and I had a strict budget to stick to when picking out furniture for this place, which was tough because we really needed everything you could possibly think of. I spent most of the budget on the pieces that mattered the most to me, and kind of pieced together the rest. Homegoods and Hobby Lobby are perfect for those small finishing touches! Nathan’s only request was a leather recliner and while I was really hesitant about how it was going to look at first, I think it blends in so nicely and makes the room look a little more cozy.
If you’re looking into buying a home or re-decorating anytime soon and will be trying to mix two different styles, I highly recommend creating a mood board on Canva. I would screenshot pictures of furniture I liked and put it on my mood board to see how it all looked together. That way I could easily see what worked and what didn’t, and so Nathan could see my overall vision and tell me what he did and didn’t like. It worked so well for us and it eliminated any need for returning furniture, because who wants to deal with that? Not me.
