Being someone who is skin care obsessed, more specifically, obsessed with having glowing clear and youthful skin, I’m no stranger to products offering extreme exfoliation. Therefore, when PMD reached out and asked me if I wanted to try their PMD Personal Microderm System there was no hesitation. For those of you who aren’t familiar with microdermabrasion here’s what you need to know: microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure what uses tiny crystals to exfoliate and remove the outer layer of dry, dead skin cells. It gets down into the nitty gritty of your skin that your other skincare devices can’t even touch. It can be used to treat light scarring, hyper pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and skin texture (source). Microdermabasian also boosts collagen, therefore leaving you with a more glowing and youthful complexion. What’s not to love right? The PMD Personal Microderm device is designed to “promote new cell growth and break up adipose tissue, resulting in smoother, firmer skin.” Sensational. Sold!
To use the PMD Personal Microderm, you’ll first start by inserting a disk under a filter on the device. The disk is customizable, as you can choose one based on the amount of abrasiveness you want to use on your skin. If you have sensitive skin like me, use the white one! I made the mistake the first time of using the green one (medium abrasiveness) and it really irritated my skin! I had some red spots on my face that made me look like I got slapped for a couple of days. Yikes! Test the device on your arm before you use it to make sure this doesn’t happen to you! (I should have read the instructions closer) (don’t be like me)
The kit comes with an instructional DVD, but ain’t nobody got time for that, so I just looked at the quick guide that came in the box and figured out how to do it! By no means should you go in blindly and just start tearing up your face, definitely definitely read the card. Microdermabrasion is a serious treatment, and it’s so important to use the device correctly. When using, you’ll want to lightly pull your skin to make it tight with one hand, and use your other hand with the device to quickly swipe it across your face in an upward motion. It doesn’t hurt at all and feels like an intense exfoliation. Basically like sandpaper..or a cat licking your face. Make sure you don’t run it across one spot of your face more than twice. You don’t want to overdo it and irritate your skin. After you are finished, you will most likely experience some redness and itchiness regardless of your skin type. Don’t be alarmed, it’s 100% natural for your skin to turn red after using the treatment. This happens because of the exfoliation, and because the vacuum suction on the device is increasing circulation in your skin!
If you use this device once a week, you’ll need to change your disk once a month. You can purchase replacement packs for $20 which comes with 4 disks for your face and 2 for your body (haven’t tried that yet). So after your initial $160 you’ll spend on the starter kit, you’ll spend less than $100 a year to maintain it. Definitely much cheaper than going to a salon and having it done professionally. In Chicago, it can cost anywhere from $100-$200 to have this treatment done once!
I’m loving my results with the PMD Personal Microderm. My skin is brighter, smoother, and it has minimized my pores and acne scars. I can’t speak about the collagen boosting yet, but I’m excited to see how the overall appearance of my skin looks over time. Is it a better device than going to the salon? I wouldn’t say it’s a better product, but I would say it’s definitely just as good as going to the salon. I feel that I get the same results, with less hassle, + I’m saving a ton of money! If you’re into exfoliation, you’ll love the PMD Personal Microderm System.
