Worth the Hype? Sunday Riley Good Genes and Luna Sleeping Night Oil Review

Sunday Riley Total Transformation Kit

You guys already know about my obsession with skincare. Back when Sephora had their VIB Rouge event a couple of months ago, I finally splurged on the Sunday Riley Total Transformation kit. It comes with smaller versions of the Good Genes and Luna Night Sleeping Oil. There has been so much hype around the Sunday Riley over the past couple of years that I have been itching to test something out from their skincare line!

I know several of you have been waiting for this post for quite a while, but I wanted to give the products 2 months on my skin especially we are dealing with anti-aging ingredients like retinol. I won’t keep you guys waiting any longer, let’s dive in! Keep in mind that I have oily acne-prone skin, so the way this product is on my skin may be different than someone else with clear or dry skin!

Luna Sleeping Night Oil

What it Claims to do:

Lune Sleeping Night Oil claims to reduce the appearance of pores and wrinkles, while fighting the signs of aging and surface redness. It also claims to make you look more luminous, even your skin tone, and reduce uneven texture, age spots, dryness, and dullness.

Sunday Riley Total Transformation Kit

What it’s Formulated With:

Luna Sleeping Night Oil is formulated with blue tansy, chamomile essential oils, retinol and blue azulene. Pro tip: never put this on and go out into sunlight. Retinol is meant to be worn at night time only. If you put on a retinoid during the day, it reverses the anti-aging effects and actually makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight.

 First Impressions:

  • Smells terrible
  • Gorgeous dark blue color
  • Serum makes my skin feel moisturized without feeling like I dipped my face in crisco
  • Feels calming
  • Takes two drops for your entire face

Overall Thoughts:

Make sure you put this oil on first and wait 5 minutes before you put Good Genes on. The first time I used this I didn’t read the directions careful enough and put Good Genes on immediately after Luna. My skin was burning and turned into a blotchy red mess. I was in a lot of pain, but it was my fault, so make sure you don’t do this!

I love how calming Luna feels when I massage it into my skin. It stinks, but theres just something so comforting about it that as it’s drying it feels so relaxing. The product did not reduce the look of my pores or fix any texture issues, but I did see a small difference in the small amount of wrinkles I have around my eyes and it helped slightly with my acne spots around my chin. Not a huge change, but it was something. The best thing this product did for my skin was take away my redness. My cheeks were always so red and I could never cover it up with foundation or concealer, but now I don’t have to because Luna has been great for calming my skin.

Good Genes

What it Claims to do:

Good Genes claims to exfoliate dull pore clogging skin cells to instantly clarify and reveal smoother clearer-looking skin. It also claims to brighten skin and reduce the visibility of dark spots, age spots, and give you more even-toned skin. It should also plump fine lines.

What it’s Formulated With:

Good Genes is formulated with lactic acid, licorice, lemongrass, and aloe.

First Impressions:

  • Tingles
  • Smells better than Luna
  • Skin looked brighter

Overall Thoughts:

I really did not like the tingle sensation that Good Genes gave my skin. It was uncomfortable! Although I think that it instantly brightened my skin and helped reduce my dark spots over time, I don’t think that it did anything for my clogged pores. I have large pores on my nose and on my cheeks, and my Clarisonic and Glam Glow mask are really the only things that clean them out! It also really irritated any blemishes I had on my skin, so I had to avoid those areas when applying. I wish I loved this more because it gets amazing reviews!

Would I Repurchase the Sunday Riley Total Transformation Kit Again?

Probably not. I think I will buy the Luna Sleeping Night Oil again because it was so calming and reduced my redness, but definitely not Good Genes. It really made my skin uncomfortable when I applied it, and it didn’t do anything for my pores. Because I think this is a set for a little bit more mature skin, I think maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I was 35+. My skin doesn’t really have wrinkles or fine lines yet, so I wonder if I would have had better luck if I was a little bit older.

Lastly, if hyper pigmentation or dark spots is a major concern for you I would try this. It did gradually reduce my dark spots, and I appreciate that they use natural products to do that. Skin lighteners often have hydroquinone in them, which is not  safe for your skin, but we will discuss that more later 😉

I wish that I loved it because I feel like everyone is raving! It irritates my blemishes so much, that I feel like it made my acne worse. I have sensitive skin though, so maybe that’s why!

Thanks so much for sharing your positive experience, these products work differently on everyone!

Thank you for your very honest review on these products! I am always looking for natural ways to remove dark spots, so I might have to give this a try.

I love how honest your review was! I actually prefer the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil personally, and use it every night!

Are you using your recovery oil in place of the Luna oil? I have been using the recovery oil for about 2 weeks and today I just bought the Good Genes.

Good review! I have some dark spot remover product that I don’t think is working (or I’m not patient enough with?)– might need to give this oil dual a try!
